Tiny Cookies, Big Joy: The Story Behind My Mini Christmas Cutters

Simple joy sparks inspiration
It was early October. You know that first magical window when the Christmas decorations start to appear in stores? We weren’t in any rush that day, just wandering through the aisles of a large department store, soaking in the sparkle of ornaments and the soft tones of this year’s festive colours. The “oh wow, Mum, look at this!” moments reminded me of all the excitement just around the corner.
As I browsed, I was on the lookout for inspiration (naturally!). Colour palettes, textures, or shapes that might spark an idea for my Christmas cookie packs. Somewhere in the back of the store, a tiny speaker was blasting Christmas music. They were trying to create a vibe, but terrible sound is not my idea of a good time! I ignored it as best I could. Then, somewhere between the gift wrap and the wreaths, I noticed something.
It was the packaging that caught my eye initially. A two-dimensional, house-shaped box with a clear window and something I know all too well... cookie cutters! Inside was a little baking gift pack filled with mini cookie cutters and a small bag of Christmas-coloured sprinkles. That was it. Nothing fancy, but something about it stopped me. It felt playful, accessible, and full of potential.
I’ve always thought of myself as a sugar cookie maker - someone who creates beautiful fondant cookies for special occasions and typically I don’t tend to think much outside that box. But this little pack sparked some curiosity. With the cost of living rising, I know that beautifully decorated cookies are a luxury item, and I wanted to offer my customers something that still carried the same sense of joy and creativity, just in a more affordable way.
Nostalgia and traditions
Then I saw a beautiful new packaging product launch into the market: Biskit Box’s 24-Day Surprise Advent Calendar, and gosh, did that get me reminiscing about Christmases past in our house! And that’s really what inspired me: nostalgia.
When our children were little, we had a Christmas tradition of a book advent. Each December, we’d wrap up 24 Christmas themed books. Some borrowed from the library, some from our own collection, and every night the kids would unwrap one before bed and we’d read it together. Reading has always been part of our family rhythm, but this made it feel extra special. It wasn’t about what was inside the wrapping (though we loved having a “new” book each night); it was about the joy of unwrapping it. The anticipation of another tiny moment to look forward to each December evening.
When I saw those mini advent bags from Biscuit Box this year, it instantly took me back to those early Christmases. I thought, how great would it be to recreate that same feeling through cookies? To give families something they could open and unwrap. A hidden surprise - even if it’s just a tiny cookie tucked inside a little heat-sealed bag.
A new tradition
And so I thought, why don't I create my own Mini Christmas Cookie Cutter Set that could work for both business owners and families, wanting to create or be part of a beautiful Christmas tradition that they can make their own.
That’s how this mini cutter set came to life. Each shape was designed (and tested) to fit perfectly into those beautiful heat-sealable advent bags, ready to be filled with a fondant-topped sugar cookie or a simple gingerbread. For my own set, I decided to go the gingerbread route because, well… it screams Christmas! I drizzled each piece with white chocolate and finished them with a custom sprinkle blend that complements the soft tones of the advent bags. I did test sugar cookies though and found 6mm dough with 3mm fondant fit neatly into the bags.
Each cutter in the set - the tree, bauble, gingerbread man, stocking, house, and star - is about 5cm tall. They’re small and simple on purpose. No stamps or extra details, just classic shapes that feel instantly familiar.
I wanted the baking process to be easy and effortless, so these little cookies could be made in batches, tucked into advent calendars (or even presented in a beautiful jar), and gifted with ease. They’re bite-sized, quick to make, and full of charm. They are the kind of simple, creative project that adds a little joy to the season without overcomplicating it.
